Big Mac Attack!
on February 4, 2012
Once a year I fly home through the Houston airport. It sounds crazy but I really look forward to eating at Mc Donald’s during our layover. It is almost a game to see how quickly we can get through immigration, customs, and security and get to Mc Donald’s with time to spare before going to our connecting flight.
I usually get a kids hamburger meal with a diet soda which is about 530 calories and 33 grams of fat. Not healthy, but not bad if it is an occassional splurge. However, this time I was hungry, tired, and in a hurry so I ordered this:
Yep, a Big Mac, medium fry, and a Diet Coke. Ordering a Diet Coke seemed silly, but at least the beverage had 0 calories! So, what are the damages?
My Big Mac meal contained 920 calories. It also had 1,325 mg of sodium, which is almost a full day of the recommended sodium level for good health — 1,500 mg to 2,300 mg — according to MayoClinic.com. All this was about double what I would have had in the Happy Meal. Did I enjoy it? YES! Will I do this again? Maybe….but not for another year.
What’s my point? No matter how hard you try- weak moments happen. Don’t beat yourself up, enjoy your “bad” meal and move on. Just be sure you go back to your healthy habits right away and spend an extra few minutes on the treadmill.
